Rockets come close in first week of 2010 Junior Season

17/02/2010

Well the Rockets took to the gridiron on a wet Sunday afternoon this week.  We fielded a team of 17, which included 12 players who have never played football before.  I need to thank all the players and parents, we had a 100% turnout.  Special mention to Hugh and Jason, who made special efforts to get down despite having injuries or other difficulties.

We made a very nervous start to the game, conceding two early touchdowns before we got going.  Then our defensive front really switched on and stuffed everything the Tornadoes could throw at them.  Taylor “Tebow” Minchin hit Aaron Clark on a short pass, to see him run it in from half way.  The Bus Rick Theodorakis with hard running ran for over 100 yards, and some extra yards from Taylor and Andrew Clark and key catches by Bad Nafrak  keep our offence moving.  Defence was helped by hard work from Sherwin Williams, Nugget Noble and good tackles by Nabil Kanengoni and Jack Clitheroe.

Another touch down by the Tornadoes put the score at 20-8.  Defence held from them on.  Taylor again hooked by with Aaron for a short range TD, which was converted by Rick the Bus brining us within a touch down of winning.  We spent the rest of the game trying to get the score to win the game.  Bad, Rick and Aaron Dudeck all got within 5 yards of scoring.

Final score 20-14.  It would have been great to get the win but we just lacked a bit of finish.  Big plusses were the way the players hung in, never gave up and we improved incredibly during the game.  We have some things to work on at training, and we’ll be a big force in the competition.  On training we have lost a night due to ground closure, so we need a good turnout on Wednesday night.
