Well the Rockets took to the gridiron on a wet Sunday afternoon this week. We fielded a team of 17, which included 12 players who have never played football before. I need to thank all the players and parents, we had a 100% turnout. Special mention to Hugh and Jason, who made special efforts to get down despite having injuries or other difficulties.
We made a very nervous start to the game, conceding two early touchdowns before we got going. Then our defensive front really switched on and stuffed everything the Tornadoes could throw at them. Taylor “Tebow” Minchin hit Aaron Clark on a short pass, to see him run it in from half way. The Bus Rick Theodorakis with hard running ran for over 100 yards, and some extra yards from Taylor and Andrew Clark and key catches by Bad Nafrak keep our offence moving. Defence was helped by hard work from Sherwin Williams, Nugget Noble and good tackles by Nabil Kanengoni and Jack Clitheroe.
Another touch down by the Tornadoes put the score at 20-8. Defence held from them on. Taylor again hooked by with Aaron for a short range TD, which was converted by Rick the Bus brining us within a touch down of winning. We spent the rest of the game trying to get the score to win the game. Bad, Rick and Aaron Dudeck all got within 5 yards of scoring.
Final score 20-14. It would have been great to get the win but we just lacked a bit of finish. Big plusses were the way the players hung in, never gave up and we improved incredibly during the game. We have some things to work on at training, and we’ll be a big force in the competition. On training we have lost a night due to ground closure, so we need a good turnout on Wednesday night.

The 2009 ACT Gridiron juniors season begins this Sunday, with the Rockets - a side fielded jointly by the University of Canberra Firebirds and the Astros - taking on the Tuggeranong Tornadoes.
With only one member returning from the side that lost the 2009 grand final 6-0 to the Centurions, this season is set to see some new talent emerge for both clubs involved.
The Rockets match against the Tornadoes kicks off at 2.30pm at Yarralumla Primary School Oval.

The University of Canberra Firebirds 2009 season ended last Saturday with a 20-15 loss to the Gladiators. After taking a 15-6 lead into the third quarter, the Firebirds could not extend the margin as the Gladiators stormed home with two late touchdowns.28/10/2009
The University of Canberra Firebirds let a 12-0 lead slip away as the Gladiators scored 16 fourth-quarter points to win their Week Nine ACT Gridiron clash 22-19 – setting up a semi-final clash between the two sides on 7 November.
After a scoreless first quarter, Jeremy Milne ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run on the first play of a Firebirds drive. Luke Job's PAT was blocked.
After some solid kickoff coverage pinned the Gladiators inside their own 20-yard line, Dan Simpson broke through on fourth down to block Chris MacKenzie's punt and give the Firebirds a short field.
Two runs by fullback Reece Cheater got the ball to the one-yard line, from where quarterback Luke Job snuck in over the left side for a 12-0 lead. Running back Ian Lanham was stuffed on the two point conversion.
The lead was halved on the last play of the first half. After a Job pass was picked off by Tim MacArthur with less than a minute remaining, the Gladiators worked their way down to the 30-yard line. As time expired, receiver Callum McRae spectacularly held onto a 30-yard pass from quarterback Tim MacArthur, using his knees to trap the ball before it hit the ground in the end zone while surrounded by three Firebirds defenders.
In the third quarter, Milne extended the lead with a 68-yard run through the left side to give the Firebirds a 19-6 advantage. It marked the fifth consecutive game in which he has rushed for at least 100 yards and scored a touchdown.
Gladiators running back Ambrose Adelaide responded with a multiple tackle-breaking 25-yard burst through the middle of the defence halfway through the fourth quarter. John Roe’s pass to Andrew MacKenzie for the two-point conversion bridged the gap to 19-14.
Facing fourth down and five near midfield with less than 30 seconds left, Roe successfully connected with a leaping Chris MacKenzie across the deep middle of the Firebirds’ pass defence. The big receiver ran upfield before being dragged down by a desperate Firebirds secondary, giving the Gladiators the ball on the one-yard line.
With 22 seconds remaining, Tim MacArthur lined up at running back and hammered the ball in for a touchdown, with his run for a two-point conversion also successful.
The Firebirds drove to midfield, but a desperation bomb by quarterback Luke Job was intercepted by Gladiators defensive back Tino Lalofau to seal the three-point and a playoff berth for the Gladiators.

Firebirds running back Jeremy Milne scored four touchdowns and quarterback Luke Job threw three touchdown passes as the Firebirds recorded their biggest win of the season.
Wide receiver Pat Millea caught three passes, including one touchdown, while Jonathan McCaskill and Kieran Igor-Taylor were on the end of Job's other scoring throws.
The win also marked the third time this season that the Firebirds have held their opponents without a score, with the defence also forcing two turnovers.
The Firebirds take on the Gladiators this Saturday, 24 October from 3pm at Greenway Enclosed Oval.

The University of Canberra Firebirds have split their two games before the October Long Weekend bye.
On September 19, the Firebirds scored three first-half touchdowns en route to a 28-0 win over the Astros. One week later, the Firebirds took on the Tuggeranong Tornadoes in a top-of-the-table clash. The Firebirds led 15-8 at haltime, but were run down in the second half as the Tornadoes completed a season sweep with a 24-15 victory.
The Firebirds have a bye round after the October Long Weekend, before closing out the regular season with their final three games.
